TALKS

CIRCULAR DESIGN

Cathryn has developed an in depth knowledge of circular design principles, both at the Centre for Circular Design and through her own research. Lectures can be tailored to focus on a specific design approach, or give an overview of circular design principles.

TEXTILE RECYCLING

DESIGN for TEXTILE RECYCLING is Cathryn's area of expertise and the focus of three years research for her PhD. Talks and lectures can be adapted to suit the level of detail required.

HOW DID I GET HERE?

This talk has been designed for students to consider their professional practice beyond university. It follows Cathryn's own experience working as an industry designer, freelancer, starting up a business then returning to education and onto PhD research.

WHAT'S A PhD ALL ABOUT?

This talk is for anyone thinking about applying for a PhD, particularly in textile design. Running through what is involved, why you might want to do one and the challenges along the way.

ONLINE

Cathryn is experienced in teaching online across a number of platforms. This is demonstrated by the free webinar Cathryn gave on Design for Mechanical Recycling April 2020.

WORKSHOPS

DESIGN OUT WASTE

This is Cathryn's area of expertise. The workshop explores the different end-of-use options for textile materials. The main challenge is to redesign complex textiles so they can flow into end-of-use systems again and again...

MATERIAL JOURNEYS

Textile and fashion designers are brilliant at using materials, but how much do we know about where the materials come from, how they are processed and the properties they hold? If we are to become circular designers of the future this information is vital; so we can exploit the benefits and make better design decisions

CCD

CIRCULAR DESIGN SPEEDS

Centre for Circular Design (CCD) co-directors Becky Earley and Kate Goldsworthy developed this workshop as part of the Mistra Futura Fashion research consortium. It looks at the speeds of use; how we design for both fast and slow.

Cathryn has taught this workshop on behalf of CCD at UAL and other institutions.

THE TEN

The TEN is a tool that designers can use to understand the challenges for achieving sustainable design. Developed by CCD these TEN strategies have emerged from a need for a toolbox for designers, to help them navigate the complexity of sustainability issues and to offer real ways for designing 'better'. Cathryn, through CCD, has lectured and run workshops to communicate the TEN at all levels.

ONE-TO-ONE

CIRCULAR SURGERIES

Cathryn has co-established  'Circular Design Lab' (CDL) with Laetitia Forst. Twice yearly CDL offers specialist 'circular and sustainable' one-to-one surgeries to all post-graduate students at UAL. A wide range of students from across the design field come and to talk through their individual work from a circular perspective.

THEORY

Cathryn has taught across both Bachelors and Masters level students marking and giving one-to-one feedback to students on there written and theoretical work.

EVENTS

THERE AND BACK AGAIN

Cathryn has co-established, the 'There and Back Again' event series with researcher Laetitia Forst. The aim is to engage the research community around the theme of designing for a circular economy. The reports from previous additions can be read here

CIRCULAR DESIGN LAB

Cathryn has co-organised the 'Circular Design Lab' (CDL) interest group. CDL is the teaching arm of CCD and an avenue for students to connect with the research at the Centre and to discuss, debate and implement circular design strategies in their own work.

UAL

SHORT COURSE

Cathryn is currently part of the CCD team team teaching the UAL short course - Design for Sustainability Fashion and Textiles. "This course will give you the fundamental principles of sustainable design today, whilst showing you where the future is heading"
